Weymouth History: Thought to have first developed as a settlement during the 12th century, Weymouth had an established port by the mid 13th century. The town was originally two separate towns and ports - Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, though later joined as one town.
The area was the location of two of Henry VIII's Device Forts (Henrician Castles) which were part of his defence system, built in case of invasion after his divorce from Catherine of Aragon. The 2 castles were Sandsfoot Castle and Portland Castle, Sandsfoot Castle is now mostly ruined, though its remains can still be seen, Portland Castle is well preserved.
The Weymouth area saw some action during the English Civil War, and at around the same time many of its inhabitants sailed to the New World to found the settlements of Weymouth Massachusetts and Weymouth Nova Scotia.
Weymouth became popular as a holiday destination during the time of George III, who used the town as his summer residence. The town still has plenty of Georgian and Regency architecture, reminding visitors of its early glory days. Tourism is still important for Weymouth, though of course it has seen some decline along with other similar English seaside resorts due to the increasing trend for taking holidays abroad.

Weymouth Harbour: One of the United Kingdom's prettiest ports, Weymouth Harbour has a long and interesting history, and its story includes tales of bitter rivalry (between Weymouth and Melcombe Regis), the Black Death, the English Civil War, the wool trade and the fishing industry.
Today the harbour is the centre of activity for visitors to the town with many of the main attractions in and around it, this is also where you will find some of the best pubs and restaurants.
Weymouth Harbour is still home to a successful fishing fleet and you can watch the fishing boats come in, and watch the daily catch being landed.
The harbour is the place to take one of the many boat trips on offer, you should certainly take the opportunity to see Weymouth Bay, Portland and the surrounding World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
